To access and edit our footage from our preliminary task we use Macs with Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Server installed on them. Final Cut Server is used to select and upload our group’s footage and Final Cut Pro is then used to cut and edit it.
Continuity editing is very important in modern narrative television, it is used to smooth over the inherent discontinuity of the editing process and to establish a logical coherence between shots. It is also used to ensure that the relevant story points are shown, to emphasize important part of a sequence and to manipulate time and space.
There are different techniques of continuity editing such as: diegetic sound, match on action, temporal discontinuity.
During our editing process we logged our chosen shots after cutting them out of the original footage. We watched through all takes of each shot and decided which one is the best. Some of the takes went wrong – for example one of the actors forgot his words or made a mistake by standing at the wrong place. Others were rejected because of a technical mistake – for example in some of the takes the focus was not set up properly.
The shots in our sequence appear in the certain order, it is very similar to our storyboard, however we changed it a bit to emphasize some parts of the story. Shot choices can be very important in telling the story. For example close ups can determine who is important in the sequence. The sequence was edited using Final Cut Pro. We have chosen to cut just before the director said cut, to make sure that her voice was not in the sequence. Then we used the frame wheel to cut it precisely when we wanted. We arranged shots they way we planned in the storyboard.
