Task 3 : What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Task 3 : What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have chosen Lionsgate Films as our distributor because of several reasons. It is a well known production and distribution company, which did a lot of teenage oriented horror and slasher movies. Lionsgate is sometimes considered to be the producer of some of the most controversial movies in the industry. It produced some of the finest movies in the genre of horror and thriller, most notably movies like Saw, American Psycho, Fahrenheit 9/11, Dogma and Hostel. Most of the movies feature extreme violence and controversial movie scenes.

The company is known for producing and distributing high grossing low budget movies, sometimes independent or from less-known production studios.

‘Saw’ is one of the examples of its media products. The budget for this movie was $1, 200, 000 and it made $103, 096, 356 in the box office, which is quite high for one of the most controversial horrors produced in the last years. It features scenes of strong violence, blood and gore. It is about a sadistic killer, who puts victims in the situations where their chances of survival are minimal, but if they survive the physical torture they escape with greater appreciation of live. The reviewers said that the film is ‘perhaps the most influential film of the decade, which kick-started a franchise that became the highest-grossing in horror industry’.

Another famous horror distrobuted by Lionsgate Films is ‘Hostel’. Hostel is a another low budget horror film with a budget of $4,500,000 and a total gross revenue of 80,578,934. It is set in Slovakia, where three American tourists visit a hostel looking for women, but are kidnapped and brutally tortured. This film was produced by Quentin Tarantino and is another horror that was reviewed as a ‘shockingly violent movie’. It earned the title ‘Empire’s Best Horror Film Of The Year’ in 2006, and is generally regarded as a successful combination of violence and sex.

I think our movies are similar to the films that Lionsgate Films distributed before. Our movie is independent and low budget, features scenes of sex and brutal graphic violence and tortures and challenges stereotypes by reversing traditional male and female representations used in horrors. In my opinion this is a type of movie Lionsgate would be interested in.
