Task 1 : In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Task 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our sequence starts with a standard logo of a distributor : Lionsgate, this informs the audience about the company who distributes the media. This is how most of the modern film start nowadays, because this shows who actually gave money to produce a sequence.

Our movie is a combination of different genres - horror and thriller. In modern film productions you can usually identifine the genre of the movie after watchi ng the opening sequence of the film (e.g Saw, Seven). Thats why we used shots and locations to create the atmosphere that is usual for our genre - lonely corridors, atmosphere, dark and cold lighting.

We challenge the conventions of modern horrors by creating a very unusual killer - a blonde girl who is traditionally a victim in most films of this genre. She looks nothing like a traditional mental serial killer who only comes out at night and wears all black.

We decided not to reveal her intentions until she actually shows us the knife. Traditionally killers use knifes in horror movies as their weapon of choice. Knifes are subconsciously scarier than guns because they have the ability not to kill instantly. We decided to use this in our thriller. Also a knife and an innocent looking girl is quite a contrast (This has been shown in the opening sequence of ‘Scream’, however the girl there was a victim, not a killer).

We decided not to use titles in our sequence because of several reasons. We watched lots of movies which had an action based opening sequence, and the titles are shown separately in th e movie. This is usually because slow titles slow down the pace of the sequence and can spoil the action part. The shot on the left is an example of a shot that was supposed to be used as a title shot, however we thought that it looks good enough without it to incorporate it into our sequence.

A lot of modern horror and thriller movies involve a lot of blood and violence in them. We used this convention by creating a very brutal stabbing scene as the culmination of our opening sequence

We decided to have our thriller title in the end, and to write it in a simple white font. This looks good and easy to read without using expensive technology as in other movie titles.
